Thanks for articulating pieces of my own spiritual journey that at times has felt contradictory and nonsensical. The Divine dwells within all of it. Face or no face. I think the Beatles had it right. It’s love, love, love. The greatest of all. And all you need. ❤️🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing your exploration of evolving belief and accessible but vivid descriptions of Godness. I have been thinking about these things similarly for decades but haven't had the words. I am a Unitarian Universalist, but I saw Light when I recently experienced a beautiful memorial service for a most dear friend at St. Paul's Cathedral in San Diego. Alas, still a UU.
Thank you Mary for reading and sharing your experience. I always feel deep holiness in Unitarian Universalist communities, and have had the profound honor of guest speaking in a number of UU congregations, as well as presenting at Camp De Benneville retreats over the years. In many very real ways, the UU universe was my first entrance into meaningful spiritual community. (As was another worldwide organization abbreviated as two vowels, AA, but that is a topic for another post). And yeah, there's nothing like the gravitas and transcendence of high church at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego. You'd be surprised by how many UUers come around for a fix of incense and antiquity. It's a place that welcomes you wherever you are on the theism-to-atheism spectrum, much like UU.
In my tradition it is said that the younger souls need a face so they can be in relationship with God and talk with God and experience God ... and the slightly older and more battered ones walk WITH God in the same direction so we don't have a face in front of us but we are either walking beside God, within God or following God (as Jesus actually asked us to do).
In Jewish Kabbalah you walk with God and in Christian you look at God. You, my dear friend walk both with and as a mirror for God. Bless you x
I am on my second read through of God Without a Face. You explain masks and the mystery behind the masks so well, and it's so freeing! So happy to have "somehow" landed on your Substack! I bought your book and it resonates, too. Look forward to reading more of your writings.
